HOW TO MEASURE YOUR WINDOW
Measuring your window correctly is essential to ensure your blinds fit perfectly.
All of our blinds are made to measure, so please take extra care when measuring.
What You’ll Need
A metal tape measure (do not use a fabric tape)
Pen & paper
A step stool (if needed)
Step 1 – Choose Your Fitting Type
Before measuring, decide how you want your blind to be fitted:
Recess Fit (Top Fix): Blind fits inside the window recess
Exact Fit (Outside the Recesss): Blind fits outside the recess, covering the window area
Recess Fit (Inside the Recess)
Choose this option if you want your blind to sit neatly inside the window recess.
Measure the Width
-
Measure the width at the top, middle, and bottom of the recess
-
Write down all three measurements
-
Use the smallest measurement
Measure the Drop
-
Measure from the top of the recess to the sill
-
Measure at the left, centre, and right
-
Use the smallest measurement
Top Tip:
Don’t make any deductions – we’ll do that for you to ensure your blind fits perfectly.
Exact Fit (Outside the Recess)
Choose this option if your recess is shallow, uneven, or you want extra coverage.
Measure the Width
-
Measure the total width you want the blind to cover
Measure the Drop
-
Measure from where you want the blind to start at the top, down to where you want it to finish
Recommended Overlap
To reduce light gaps, we recommend:
-
At least 50 mm extra on each side
-
At least 70 mm extra at the top
Top Tip:
The size you give for Exact Fit is the exact size we’ll make your blind. No deductions are made.
Step 2 – Check Your Recess Depth (Important)
If fitting inside the recess, check that your window is deep enough for the blind and brackets.
Minimum Recess Depth
| Product Type | Slat Size | ||
| Wooden Blinds | 25 mm | 5 cm | |
| Wooden Blinds | 50 mm | 6.5 cm | |
| Venetian Blinds (Aluminium) | 25 mm | 3.5 cm | |
| Venetian Blinds (Aluminium) | 50 mm | 5 cm |
Step 3 – Important Measuring Tips
Always measure in millimetres or centimetres
Use the smallest measurement for recess fitting
Check for window handles, tiles, skirting boards, or vents
Ensure surfaces are straight and not angled
Measure carefully – made-to-measure blinds cannot be altered once produced
Common Measuring Mistakes to Avoid
- Guessing measurements
- Using a fabric tape
- Measuring only once
- Making your own deductions
- Ignoring obstructions
